Wissenschaft und Technik verketten gern komplizierte Fachbegriffe, auch Politik und Marketing haben den Drang, eindrucksvolle Wortgebilde für Ihre Produkte und Anliegen zu finden. Weil diese Zungenbrecher kein Mensch dauernd aussprechen kann, gibt es gleich die passenden Kürzel. So heißt die aktuelle Chemikalienverordnung zwar offiziell „Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals“, firmiert aber meist knapp und praktisch als REACH.

Hinter den einzelnen Buchstaben von klassischen Abkürzungen im engeren Sinne wird in der Regel ein Punkt verlangt („z.B.“, „i.A.“); wenn man sie ausspricht, so wählt man die Langform und sagt „zum Beispiel“ oder „im Auftrag“. Ansonsten gelten als Abkürzungen einfach alle Buchstabenkombinationen und Kürzel, die sich in eine (längere) Wortfolge übersetzen lassen („QMS, „UMTS“). Eine Besonderheit sind die Akronyme: Bei dieser Sorte Kürzel ergibt sich ein (neues) Kunstwort wie „COSO“, „Lohas“ oder „SWOT“.

Der nachfolgenden alphabetischen Liste geht es nicht darum, möglichst viele Kürzel gedankenlos in Begriffsgeklingel zu übersetzen. Denn das sagt den meisten dann ebenso wenig wie zuvor. (So etwas macht www.all-acronyms.com oder www.acronymfinder.com auch viel besser.) Stattdessen finden Sie im MittelstandsWiki zu jedem Kürzel zuverlässige Darstellungen, praxisnah und sofort brauchbar, manche kurz und bündig auf den Punkt gebracht (ATP oder VPD), andere als fundierte Fachartikel (AGG oder PoS).
